AviaGPS / GPS guides

Does iPad have GPS?

Only Wi-Fi + Cellular iPads have a built-in GPS receiver. Wi-Fi-only iPads estimate their location from nearby Wi-Fi networks, which is not a reliable source of position in flight.

Which iPads have GPS?

Apple lists GPS/GNSS under Location only for Wi-Fi + Cellular models. Wi-Fi models list a digital compass, Wi-Fi, and iBeacon microlocation, but no GPS. This is true of every model in Apple’s current iPad lineup, from iPad mini to iPad Pro.

On the ground, a Wi-Fi iPad can often place itself near known Wi-Fi networks. That is not a satellite position fix. In flight, a Wi-Fi-only iPad has no satellite GPS fix of its own, so apps such as ForeFlight can’t show where you are without an outside GPS source. ForeFlight’s guidance says the same: a Wi-Fi-only iPad needs an external GPS receiver.

How to check whether your iPad has GPS

  1. Look for Cellular in Settings. If Settings has a Cellular (or Mobile Data) section, you have a Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad with built-in GPS. Wi-Fi-only models don’t show it.
  2. Check the model number. Open Settings → General → About and tap the model number until it starts with “A”. Then find it on Apple’s Identify your iPad model page, which lists Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + Cellular versions separately.
  3. Confirm in Apple’s tech specs. Look up your model and check whether GPS/GNSS is listed under Location. If your cellular iPad has no fix in ForeFlight, follow ForeFlight’s GPS tips to check reception and permissions.

Does a cellular iPad need a data plan for GPS?

No. The GPS receiver in a Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad works without an active cellular plan. A plan provides cellular internet where coverage is available, but it isn’t needed for a position fix. Download charts and other data over Wi-Fi before you fly.

Does iPad mini have GPS?

Only the Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad mini has GPS. The current iPad mini (A17 Pro) Wi-Fi + Cellular model lists GPS/GNSS; the Wi-Fi model doesn’t. Apple lists the Wi-Fi model at 293 grams (0.65 pound) and the cellular model at 297 grams (0.66 pound).

Many pilots like the iPad mini’s 8.3-inch size on a kneeboard. If you are choosing between models, see Best iPad for ForeFlight.

How to add GPS to a Wi-Fi iPad

  • Your iPhone’s GPS, through AviaGPS. No extra receiver needed if you fly with ForeFlight: AviaGPS sends your iPhone’s position to ForeFlight on your Wi-Fi iPad over shared Wi-Fi or the iPhone’s Personal Hotspot.
  • A Bluetooth GPS receiver, such as the Garmin GLO 2 or Dual XGPS160. Compare them in Garmin GLO 2 vs Bad Elf GPS vs Dual XGPS160.
  • An ADS-B receiver with GPS, which can also add traffic and weather, depending on the model.

Connecting the iPad to your iPhone’s Personal Hotspot alone does not share the iPhone’s GPS. Learn why, and what does work. For every option side by side, read GPS for iPad.
