MADE FOR THE SETUP YOU HAVE
iPhone location + Local Wi-Fi + ForeFlight on iPad

A good iPad. One missing piece.

Keep the iPad.
Add the position.

Your Wi-Fi-only iPad can run ForeFlight, but it doesn’t have a built-in GPS receiver. Your iPhone does.

AviaGPS is designed to connect the two, sharing your iPhone’s location over the local network. Another option when position is what you need.

  1. 01

    Open AviaGPS

Set up AviaGPS on your iPhone. Allow precise location and local network access, and activate AviaGPS Pro to enable sharing.

  2. 02

    Connect your devices

The app is designed to discover ForeFlight when both devices share a local network. Keep ForeFlight open on your iPad.

  3. 03

    Check the position

In ForeFlight, open More → Devices and check for AviaGPS. Verify that ForeFlight is receiving and using the expected position.

Development status Device-to-device reception, Personal Hotspot, and locked-screen operation are still awaiting physical-device verification.

AviaGPS shares position. Your choice of GPS

Already have an iPhone
and a Wi-Fi-only iPad?

That’s the setup we’re building for. Use the iPhone’s location as an additional position source for ForeFlight.

  • iPhone app targeting iOS 16 or later
  • iPad supported by your version of ForeFlight
  • Local network access and precise location enabled

Final device and OS compatibility is pending testing.

Already have a position source?

You may already have what you need.

Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad
Has built-in GPS. An active cellular data plan isn’t required to use it.
Dedicated GPS receiver
A separate position source that doesn’t depend on your iPhone.
ADS-B receiver or connected avionics
May also provide traffic, weather, or attitude. AviaGPS does not provide these features.

A few things to know

Before you

The GPS questions,
without the guesswork.

Does a Wi-Fi-only iPad have GPS?

No. Wi-Fi-only iPads don’t have a built-in GPS receiver. They can estimate location near Wi-Fi access points, but that is different from a GPS position source. ForeFlight can receive position from compatible external sources.

Do I need a cellular iPad or a data plan?

You can use ForeFlight on a compatible Wi-Fi-only iPad; a suitable external source can provide GPS position. A Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad has its own GPS hardware, which works without an active cellular data plan.

Does Personal Hotspot share my iPhone’s GPS?

Personal Hotspot alone is not a dedicated GPS feed for ForeFlight. AviaGPS explicitly sends compatible position messages over the local network. The iPhone-hosted Personal Hotspot setup is intended, but physical-device verification is still pending.

Does AviaGPS need internet or cellular service?

The position-sharing code sends data directly between devices on the local network, without a cloud relay. That does not establish tested offline operation. Network setup, including Personal Hotspot availability, can depend on your device and carrier. Offline and hotspot behavior will be confirmed through physical-device testing before launch.

Will it keep sharing with the screen locked?

The app is configured to continue an active session using iOS background location. Locked-screen and background continuity have not yet been verified on physical devices. Force-quitting the app ends sharing.

Does it replace a GPS or ADS-B receiver?

AviaGPS is designed to address the position-sharing part of a setup. A dedicated GPS receiver works independently of your phone. ADS-B receivers such as Sentry can also provide traffic, weather, and, on some models, attitude information. AviaGPS provides none of those additional capabilities.

How does it communicate with ForeFlight?

AviaGPS implements ForeFlight’s documented GDL 90 interface. It discovers ForeFlight on the local network and sends position messages directly to it. A sending status in AviaGPS does not confirm reception; check the source and position in ForeFlight itself.

ForeFlight does not test or support third-party devices using this interface. AviaGPS is an independent product.

Can I use AviaGPS for navigation?

No. AviaGPS is experimental, unapproved, and for reference only. It is not certified aviation equipment and must not be used for navigation or relied on for flight safety.

When can I get it, and what will it cost?

AviaGPS is coming soon to the App Store. There is no announced launch date. GPS sharing will require AviaGPS Pro; plan details will be available at launch. ForeFlight is sold separately.
